HomeGlossaryAltcoin

Altcoin

An altcoin is a cryptocurrency that is not Bitcoin. The term “altcoin” is a portmanteau of “alternative” and “coin,” and it is used to describe any cryptocurrency that was created after Bitcoin. Altcoins are often based on the Bitcoin blockchain, but they may have different features or properties.

Here are a few notable examples of altcoins:

  1. Ethereum (ETH
  2. Litecoin (LTC)
  3. Ripple (XRP)
  4. Cardano (ADA)
  5. Monero (XMR)

Altcoins are often created to address some of the perceived shortcomings of Bitcoin. For example, Ethereum was created to provide a platform for smart contracts. Litecoin was created with the intention of being a faster and more scalable alternative to Bitcoin.
